SMP for Men

A modern, low maintenance solution for hair loss, scalp micropigmentation is changing the lives of men and women worldwide. More than half a million people have chosen SMP to hide their hair loss, and popularity of this incredible camouflage for thinning hair continues to grow.

A highly innovative procedure, scalp micropigmentation has existed in basic form for more than 20 years, but only during the last 10 years or so that SMP has gained mainstream status as a solution for hair loss. Pioneered simultaneously by several thought leaders in Europe and the United States, scalp micropigmentation is now practiced worldwide.

Sometimes described as hair tattooing, hair follicle replication or tricopigmentation, scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a delicate and detailed process of implanting tiny pigment deposits into the upper dermis of the scalp. Designed to replicate shaven hair growth, thousands of carefully placed deposits combine to create the illusion of a full head of shaved hair.

SMP for Women

Originally developed as a treatment for men, scalp micropigmentation is now used to treat thousands of women worldwide who are experiencing some kind of ongoing hair loss.

Women lose hair for a variety of reasons. Often it’s a hormonal imbalance which can manifest itself as a long term problem, although there are many shorter term causes too. A recent pregnancy is a common cause, referred to as postpartum hair loss, or hair loss can be traced back to a reaction to certain medications. Alopecia is also common among women, a condition that takes many forms including alopecia areata (patchy hair loss), alopecia totalis (total hair loss on the head) or various types of diffuse thinning, often caused by a condition called telogen effluvium.

Whatever the root cause, scalp micropigmentation for women is a solution that is suitable in many cases as it reduces the contrast in color from the hair to the scalp, creating a denser look and hiding much of the impact of hair loss in our female clients.

SMP for alopeica

Alopecia can cause significant distress and anxiety to those who experience the condition. From patchy and localized hair loss, known as alopecia areata, to complete head hair loss, referred to as alopecia totalis, the impact on men and women alike is severe and long lasting.

Scalp micropigmentation remains the ONLY guaranteed solution for alopecia. SMP is not a cure, but a highly effective cover-up for its symptoms that provides genuine closure for alopecia sufferers.

Utilizing thousands of tiny pigment deposits, scalp micropigmentation mimics the appearance of shaven hair in men, or for female clients or those who wish to keep their hair longer, SMP can be used to hide patches or areas of diffuse thinning. Less common types such as scarring alopecia, traction alopecia and telogen effluvium can also be disguised with scalp micropigmentation.

This modern solution is a game-changer for alopecia sufferers. No longer forced to rely on ineffective remedies like immunotherapy, corticosteroid injections and minoxidil, at last there is a real solution that offers genuine, instantaneous results.

SMP for scarring

Scalp micropigmentation was originally developed as a technique to hide scars from hair transplant surgery and head trauma. As our understanding of SMP has evolved, so too have the incredible results we are able to achieve for the concealment of all kinds of scars. Today, the most common requests are for the concealment of FUT and FUE hair transplant scars, neurosurgery scars, burns, birthmarks and accident scars.

Follicular unit transplantation (FUT) or ‘strip’ is the traditional hair transplant method. The result of this surgery is a linear scar, usually at the back of the head although sometimes at the side behind the ears. Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is a more modern and less invasive technique. FUE creates ‘dot’ scars at the back of the head in the donor area. In both cases as the hair continues to thin after surgery, these scars can become increasingly difficult to hide.

Scalp micropigmentation uses hundreds of tiny pigment deposits to blend scar tissue with the surrounding hair and skin, making the scars much less visible. Most of our clients choose to shave their heads at this stage, although this is not strictly necessary in all cases, so if you wish to keep your hair at a longer length, you may be able to do so.
